About an origin каrate it is known only from legends. So, on one of legends, каратэ it is considered the founder Bodhidharma, the founder of the zen-Buddhism which in 520 has AD transferred the residence from India to China, in a monastery a Shaolin located on a slope of woody mountain Shaoshi in several tens of kilometres from a city of Cheng-chou. This monastery also became the centre of its doctrine about the Buddha, and at the same time and the centre intellectual and physical training of followers of this doctrine.

In Shaolin Bodhidharma monastery trained the pupils in ability to suffer (endurance), to develop force, speed, dexterity, flexibility. Trainings spent by it were based on a principle of movements of animals with elements of self-defence and presumably 18 movements of hands архата »were called«. These exercises strength of mind and bodies became stronger, preparation for tests what long sessions of meditation were was carried out. Besides, these exercises served as a protection frame on roads outside of a monastery. Further methods of physical trainings of Bodhidharmy developed and improved and became known as fighting art of a monastery a Shaolin.
